Some HMOs are called “managed care,” where the primary care providers are the managers of the patients’ care and approve or deny procedures they see fit. Usually most procedures are covered; however, I have to document my findings and request approvals before I can move forward with treatment. This can take one day up to several weeks for approval. Generally, specialists are not utilized for emergency care; patients can go to the emergency room for same-day approved care.
